Classroom Questions
I’m a faculty member and need help developing a project for my class that is web-based. Who do I contact?
We have a department within ITS called Academic Technology that handles these special projects. Each of the six LMU colleges and schools are supported by an Instructional Technology Analyst (ITA) who provides one-on-one consultations, workshops, training sessions, and general support to faculty members for improvement of teaching and learning environments through the use of various academic technologies. Click here to find out which ITA supports your College/School.

Email-Related Questions
I can’t send e-mail from home anymore through the University e-mail system. What changed?
The ability to send mail via SMTP through LMU’s servers was blocked from off-campus to improve the security and functionality of University systems. The previous configuration allowed a direct path to our mail servers from off campus which allowed spam, viruses and other malware to bypass our spam filter. What this means for you is that you’ll spend less time managing unwanted email or worrying about virus-related messages.

OK, that makes sense. How can I check and send email from home?
The officially supported off-campus email solution is Outlook Web Access (OWA), accessible in MYLMU under Systems Login .

Are there any alternatives to using ManeGate to send email through LMU’s mail systems?

Yes, although they are not supported. For your convenience ITS has made access available using Microsoft Outlook 2003 and Microsoft Entourage 2004.

    Microsoft Outlook 2003 for Windows

Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Macintosh OS X

All my old messages are in my POP email application at home. Is there a way I can import them into an application that will work with LMU’s system?
Yes. All of the applications described in the alternative access methods above have the ability to import messages from another email client application.

File Sharing
I want to share some of my files via the Web. What are my options?

If you need to share some files with another person, you may utilize “LIONshare” which allows you to do exactly that. You may choose to share the file(s) either with or without a password, as well as whether your intended audience has read or write privileges.

I don’t know how to use LIONshare or create a Web site. How do I get training?
Our Human Resources Department offers Technology Training and Development Workshops throughout the year. Check out the calendar.

Online Forms & Databases
I’m a staff ,member who needs to collect information online and I think I need a web-based database! Can you help?
If you are looking to collect information on-line via a web-form and then have that information be emailed to you and/or saved , then what you’re looking for is what’s called a “Web Survey”. Your request is actually quite simple. Click here to request assistance with getting your web survey underway. helpdesk@lmu.edu

I’m a staff member who is looking for more than a web survey and really is in need of a custom-developed web application. Can you help me with this?
Yes. The ITS Web Programming Department can help you with these types of requests. You may begin the consultation part of the project by sending an email to helpdesk@lmu.edu. Your request will be forwarded to the Web Programming Department, and somebody will contact you to gather further information. Please note that these projects are handled through the official ITS Project Management Department and may have to go through the budget process.

Passwords
What is a good password?

A good password is...

  • is not guessable by any program in a reasonable time (less than one week)
  • is easily remembered (so there is no need to write it down)
  • is private (it is used and known by one person only)
  • is secret (it does not appear in clear text in any file or program or on a piece of paper pinned to the terminal).

Why should I choose good passwords?
The use of a bad password may allow someone to use your account and therefore to use, modify, corrupt or destroy any of your files or any files that you are allowed to modify.

For more about passwords, log into MYLMU and visit Information Technology Services

Personal Web Pages
How can I get personal Web storage space to create a Web site?

If you are looking to create a Web site,  faculty and staff members may obtain
what’s called a “Myweb” account. These accounts are for personal use only, and cannot be used for department information. (Please read the guidelines for Myweb Accounts.)  Please send an email to helpdesk@lmu.edu asking for the creation of a Myweb account.
