This is a replication of the handout given to new LMU Parents during Orientation 2008.
What is Information Technology?
The Information Technology Department maintains the campus & voice and data communications network. Additional information about LMU Information Technology Services may be obtained via the ITS website located at ITS.lmu.edu
LMU-Net
The LMU campus network offers access to a high-speed, full-service Internet connection, including e-mail and Web access. Access to the LMU network is via NIC or wireless card and is similar to a home broadband connection like DSL or Cable-Modem.
Network Access
All registered students may access the LMU network from their on-campus residence, student labs, or campus study areas.
ManeGate: Everything LMU. All In One Place.
What is ManeGate? ManeGate provides secure access to University services for students, faculty, and staff. ManeGate is a one-stop resource for LMU announcements, e-mail, calendar, registration, course tools, group tools, news, events, forms, and much more.
How do I access ManeGate? ManeGate is available by directing your browser to: http://manegate.lmu.edu. First time users may lookup their e-mail addresses by following the New to ManeGate? button.
How do I get an account? All registered students receive an LMU account. This account allows access to ManeGate and student email.
What does my username look like? Account names generally are the first initial of the first name, followed by seven characters of the last name. Email is that account name followed by @lion.lmu.edu. If more than one student has a similar first and last name, a number will be assigned as part of the e-mail address. (i.e.jsmith23@lion.lmu.edu)
What is my password? Your password can be reset using the Forgot Your Password? link on the Manegate home page. Students are required to change their passwords every 180 days to maintain the security of their account.
Since the LION e-mail account will be used for official University communications it is very important that students check for new messages.
Registration and Financial information and deadlines will be sent to this address.
Modems vs. NIC cards
Resident students do not need a modem to access LMU-Net from on-campus. Access is via a network card (a.k.a. NIC or Ethernet card) instead of a modem. Many computers currently sold have this equipment built in. RJ45 Network (Ethernet) Cable
In addition to the Ethernet card, you will need the RJ45 connector cable which runs from the card to the network data jack in your room.
Recommended NIC Cards
Intel 10/100 dual speed.
3Com 10/100 dual speed.
Linksys 10/100 dual speed.
Wireless Networking
As of Fall 2005 Wireless access to the Internet will be available in and around all buildings on campus.
To use LMU Wireless access we recommend access cards that support 802.11b or 802.11g. Macintosh computers often refer to their wireless cards as Airport Cards.
Many newer laptops feature built-in wireless networking (a separate wireless card is unnecessary) and most older systems may be easily outfitted with a wireless card. The LMU wireless connections offer users an 11Mbps connection to the Web, E-Mail, and other Internet functions.
Do I Need To Own A Computer?
You can access LMU-Net from the student computer labs on campus. It is therefore not necessary to own a personal computer.
Computer Labs
Information Technology Services maintains two public computer labs for student use. The St. Roberts Student Computing Lounge, located in the St. Roberts basement, and the Von der Ahe Computing Lab, located in the library basement. Other computing labs available on campus are equipped to meet specific academic requirements. Information regarding these specialized labs will be made available to students as needed by their instructors.
Computer Guidelines
If I Want To Buy A Computer, What Type Should I Get?
If you are planning to purchase a new computer, we recommend a system with the following specifications:
PC Compatible: Any currently sold PC with Windows XP Professional, 512 MB RAM, equipped with an Ethernet Card.
Macintosh: Any currently sold Macintosh, 512 MB RAM, equipped with an Ethernet Card.
LAPTOP: Make sure your laptop also includes a wireless (802.11b or g) card built in. For the Mac Laptop it will be called Airport.
Where Can I Purchase A Computer Or Accessories?
You may purchase a computer from the retailer of your choice. ITS recommends that you decide on a price limit then shop around. Many retailers will meet or beat their competitors prices so remember to bring the printed ad along with you while you shop.

Journey Education Marketing
Can My Computer Be Shipped Directly To LMU From The Manufacturer?
To ensure the security of your belongings, we recommend that you avoid shipping belongings directly to LMU prior to arriving on campus to receive them. This means that if you purchase the computer during the summer, you should have it shipped to your home address.
What If I Already Have A Computer? Can I Use It To Access LMU-Net?
If you plan to bring a computer you already own to an on-campus facility, the minimum requirements for connecting to LMU-Net are:
PC Compatible: Pentium 4 processor, 512MB RAM, Windows XP or higher, equipped with an Ethernet Card.
Macintosh: PowerPC G3 or better, 512M RAM, OS X or better, equipped with an Ethernet Card.
Do I Need To Bring Any Software?
Operating System (OS): If you will be bringing a personal computer, it is important that you bring a copy of your computer's Operating System (or setup) CD, i.e. your Windows OS or MAC OS CD. It may be necessary to access these files when getting setup on LMU-Net.
Other software: (ie. word-processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.) must be purchased and installed locally on your system. LMU-Net provides you with an Internet connection and e-mail access much like a commercial ISP does in your home. Any other software that you need on your computer must be purchased and installed separately by you.
Virus Protection
Remember to protect yourself! IT urges everyone to utilize current virus protection software. McAfee and Norton are manufacturers of popular virus protection packages. Regardless of the product you select, it is important to keep the software updated – most companies offer updates online. The campus high-speed connection makes downloading virus definition updates particularly easy.
Do I Need To Own A Printer?
Printers for student use are available in the public computer labs. A valid LMU One-Card is necessary to utilize Student Lab printing equipment.
Can I access my ManeGate from off-campus?
Yes, ManeGate, the campus portal, will be available from off campus internet connections.
Can I Use The Network When I Am On-Campus?
Yes. You can access your LMU-Net account using computers in on-campus labs, connecting your own computer in LMU resident facilities, or using your own computer's wireless connection at campus wireless hotspots.
Copyright Issues
File sharing is something many students do. Some sharing may be legal and some of it is not legal. Reason not to file share:
Clogging of network affects LMU's ability to work effectively
Creates ways for hackers to get into your computer Disable all sharing on your PC and it will perform better
Downloading of copyrighted materials is only legal when:
You have the copyright holder's permission to do so
You use a small amount of material for a course assignment
You have paid the required fee for the material
If you use KaZaA, eDonkey, Fasttrack or other file sharing technologies, you must restrict unauthorized access to copyrighted materials on your computer. Failing to do so can lead to serious legal consequences.
Just as individuals browse the Web for music, films, games, and software -- so do copyright holders who are searching for unauthorized copies of their work. There are companies hired solely for this purpose. Because universities have a concentrated, easy to identify, number of individuals who do engage in file sharing, they are monitored closely by copyright holders.
(Last year over seventy students received notices of copyright infringement. Four also face legal action as a result (subpoenas were issued). We suggest you use a legal commercial site such as Napster or iTunes for downloading music file. )
Student Help Desk
The Student Help Desk, located within the St. Roberts Student Computing Lounge, provides computing, network, and telephone support for LMU students. This office serves as a single point of contact for students requiring assistance on technology related issues including network connectivity, e-mail, telephone, and voicemail.
The Student Help Desk is available to assist in network or ManeGate access as well as limited hardware support, operating system support, application support, and data recovery on student-owned computer equipment.
The Student Help Desk is open Monday through Friday, 9am to 6pm, and may be contacted via telephone at 310-338-7777 (the on-campus extension is 87777), or via e-mail at studenthelp@lmu.edu.
Telephone Service
Basic Information
All dorm room telephone ports are active. Service includes voicemail (multiple mailboxes available), call waiting, call forwarding and 3-Way (Conference) calling. Any phone sold at retail will work, although to avoid conflict with the LMU Wireless network, do not bring 2.4 Ghz phones. Fax machines will work.
LMU Long Distance Phone Service Policies
STUDENT RESIDENT LOCAL & LONG DISTANCE TELEPHONE SERVICE AND MONTHLY BILLING ARE PROCESSED DIRECTLY BY LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY THROUGH THE CAMPUS BUSINESS SERVICES OFFICE.
How it works:
Students will be given a PBN (Personal Billing Number) that allows each resident to access and place local and long distance calls from any room extension on campus. The PBN is similar to a charge card and creates a billing record for each call placed. EACH STUDENT IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY AND ALL CALLS MADE WITH HIS/HER PERSONAL BILLING NUMBER. Under no circumstances should the number be given to or shared with anyone. Should a problem arise contact the Campus Business Services office, ext. 82735, via email at:bussvcs@lion.lmu.eduor come into the Campus Business Services Office – St. Robert's Annex.
LMU Long Distance telephone service is currently not available to commuter students.
Bills are processed on or around the 15th of each month. Students receive an email in their LION email account, generally by the 18th , with a due date for bill payment and instructions for accessing the telephone web portal to view/print their bill and to pay their bill on-line. NO PRINTED BILLS ARE MAILED. Students are to contact the Campus Business Services office if they have problems accessing the telephone web portal.
Payments can be made by check, cashier's check, or money order payable to LMU, or in person at the Business services office using Flexi dollars. Returned checks will be charged a $25.00 service fee. All future payments must be made by cashier's check or Flexi dollars.
There is a $150.00 monthly limit on calls. Once the limit is reached, the PBN will be deactivated and payment is required to reactivate. Should a higher limit be required, contact the Campus Business Services Office. The following rules will apply for higher limit accounts:
- The deposit is not available to cover payments, except to cover the last payment after student has left housing.
- Your monthly charges will need to be paid in full each month in a timely manner.
All bills are due in full by the due date. If the balance is a negative (-) or under $5.00, payment may be deferred and PBNs will not be deactivated. All telephone bills, regardless of amount, must be paid at the end of the school year.
Accounts that are not current prior to the next billing cycle will have their telephone service interrupted. There will be a $15.00 reactivation fee for interrupted service. Should the account not be current by the second billing cycle from the original bill, the account will be turned over to Student Accounts and a hold may be placed on the student's account. If service is interrupted for non-payment twice within a school year, all future phone service will be on a prepay basis. At the end of the school year or when a student leaves housing, a refund by check or as a transfer to Student Accounts may be requested of any remaining prepaid balance.
LMU Telephone Service allows the student to make and receive all types of direct dial and operator-assisted calls except for the following instances:
- Calls to 900 and 976 numbers are restricted throughout the University telephone system.
- Calling card or operator-assisted calls may NOT be charged back to your University room telephone number.
- Incoming collect calls may not be accepted.
Under no circumstance may long-distance service be changed by or to another provider.
In the event that Pacific Bell or any other telephone company processes these types of calls, a $10 special handling charge will be assessed for each occurrence on your telephone bill, in addition to the actual charges for the call.
The above policies are subject to change. It is the responsibility of students to check their Lion Email, campus mailbox, and the Business Services Office on a regular basis for updates.
