NetReg is an automated system that requires an unknown network user to register their computer before gaining full network access. Through a simple web interface, the student is prompted for their user identification, in this case, their ManeGate credentials. Powerful scripts then retrieve the client's network fingerprint and store it along with the user's information in a database. The database provides administrators with real-time information for troubleshooting and auditing their networks.
NetReg was written with many uses in mind. The primary use is for Tech Support staff to see networking information about a student's computer without having to make a house call. Tech Support can determine if the user's problem is software or network based and schedule the proper staff to inspect and fix the problem. NetReg is great for providing demographic data on the types of machines and platforms students are using.
The benefits of registering your computer with NetReg is that it allows ITS to more accurately and efficiently observe and diagnose student technology issues that may arise, such as virus activity and connectivity issues. Many universities employ this or a similar system for use on their student networks. In short, it helps LMU begin its journey to serve the resident student body better in their technology needs.
When they first see the NetReg page, students will have the opportunity to take some time to look for updates and make sure their computer’s operating system is up to date. ITS strongly encourages the use of Anti-Virus software and Anti-Spyware programs as well. From there, the login simply requires an acceptance of LMU’s Acceptable Use Policy and logging in using one’s ManeGate credentials. Instructions are also available for registering your online gaming devices.
NetReg DOES NOT monitor content or traffic on your computer. It is only a program to assist in troubleshooting and network maintenance.
