Best Practices for Data Storage and Sharing
To protect university data and ensure compliance with LMU policies, follow these secure storage and sharing guidelines:
Use Box – LMU’s Supported & Approved Cloud Storage
- Box is the only LMU-approved cloud storage solution for university data.
- All LMU departments and employees should use Box for storing, sharing, and collaborating on files.
- Do not use Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, or other non-approved services to store LMU information.
Security Benefits of Box
- Files are encrypted at rest and in transit, providing strong protection for sensitive data.
- Box offers visibility, access controls, and recovery options to help manage and secure university information.
- Need help? Contact the ITS Service Desk servicedesk@lmu.edu for Box support.
If Local Storage Is Necessary
- Mac users: Enable FileVault to encrypt your hard drive.
- Windows users: Use BitLocker for full-disk encryption.
- Set your device to auto-lock after a short period of inactivity.
Always Use the VPN
- When working off-campus or on public Wi-Fi, connect to the LMU VPN to encrypt your internet traffic and protect data in transit.
