Learning and Scholarship

Goal #1 - Learning and Scholarship

Enhance the curricular and scholarly experience at LMU by ensuring that learning environments, in all modalities (online, in-person, and hybrid), are leading-edge, widely accessible, and easy-to-use for both faculty and students. Deliver robust, user-friendly, and highly reliable technology services and resources for faculty, scholars, and students.

Initiatives

Each goal is defined and accompanied by specific initiatives that either maintain (Run), expand upon (Grow), or completely rethink (Transform) the current ITS approach. In addition, each goal has metrics that are key indicators of movement towards that goal.

    • Upgraded ~ 70 general purpose classrooms to new Crestron AV Platform to prepare for the Fall 2021 campus reopening
    • Implemented Zoom Navigators program
    • Pivoted the Classroom Support team to provide remote learning support
    • Expanded Zoom storage capabilities to meet remote learning needs
    • HFP - 11 Flex Classrooms Newly Built
    • Installed Microphones in all general-purpose classrooms to improve voice amplifications
    • Created back to the bluff training materials to highlight learning space changes for hybrid learning
    • Replaces all in-room training materials to provide better guidance for using hybrid technologies
  • Brightspace

      • Brightspace Active Courses
        • Summer 2020 - 84 % (+22% over Summer 2019)
        • Fall 2020 - 93% (+19% over Fall 2019)
        • Spring 2021 - 91% (+18% over Pre-Pandemic Spring 2020)
      • LLS Brightspace Adoption - Brightspace was not used before Fall 2020
        • Fall 2020 - 84% courses active
        • Spring 2021 - 68% courses Active
      • Over 300 faculty participated in the eFaculty and other instructional technology-based training (this is in addition to the 300+ trained in Spring 2020 for a total of 600+ since the start of the pandemic)
    Classroom Capture
      • LMU's Classroom Capture system, Echo360 was not used before Summer 2020, as a separate home-grown system was previously used. During FY 2021, just over 5,000 class sessions were recorded.
      • Conversely, there were less than 300 Echo 360 recordings on the Westchester campus due to remote teaching and learning.
      • The key difference is LLS records all class sessions. To accomplish this during remote teaching, faculty recorded their Zoom classes, which were subsequently published for student viewing using Echo360.
    Assessment Technology
      • Over 40,000 assignments were submitted to TurnItIn
      • 236 Courses used Respondus Lockdown Browser to prevent cheating on an exam
      • 10,800 Respondus Monitor sessions (AI proctoring)
    • Increased capacity to accommodate the growing need for virtual labs and work spaces
    • Added additional servers and high-speed storage
    • Added labs to provide access to unique and specialized software packages
  • Although research activity slowed down significantly due to the pandemic, ITS was able to support several key research projects, including figuring out ways to move research online.
