The Power of Names Initiative Continues
Respect Starts with a Name
At Loyola Marymount University, we believe every name matters.
Names are a powerful part of our identity. Taking the time to learn and pronounce someone's name correctly is a simple yet meaningful way to foster respect, belonging, and inclusion across our community.
As part of LMU's commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, we are launching the Power of Names Initiative and introducing Namecoach, a tool that helps faculty, staff, and students record and share the pronunciation of their names.
Whether you're meeting a student for the first time, collaborating with a colleague, or connecting with a member of the LMU community, getting a name right helps build stronger relationships and creates a culture where everyone feels seen, valued, and respected. This aligns with the inclusion-focused approaches adopted by peer institutions using Namecoach.
Why Names Matter

What is Namecoach
Namecoach is the technology platform that supports the Power of Names initiative.
With Namecoach, you can:
✅ Record the pronunciation of your name
✅ Listen to the recorded names of others
✅ Help classmates, colleagues, faculty, and staff learn the correct pronunciation of your name
✅ Share how your name should be spoken in the tools you use every day
At LMU, Namecoach is being introduced within:
- Microsoft Teams
- Outlook
- Brightspace
The goal is simple: make it easier for everyone to address one another accurately and respectfully. Peer institutions use Namecoach to support inclusion and provide name pronunciation across campus systems.
